The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 3299 (AFSCME) Union has provided formal notice of a strike and picketing activity by members of the Service (SX) unit and Patient Care Technical (EX) Unit. The strike is scheduled to take place at all UC medical centers, campuses, and the Lawrence Berkeley Lab. The AFSCME 24-hour strike will commence at 12:00 a.m. on May 1, 2025, and conclude at 11:59 p.m. May 1, 2025.
The University Professionals and Technical Employees CWA Local 9119 (UPTE CWA 9119) has also provided formal notice of strike and picketing activity by members in the Research Professional Unit (RX), Technical Unit (TX) and Health Care Professionals Unit (HX). The UPTE-CWA strike is scheduled to take place at all UC medical centers, campuses, and the Lawrence Berkeley Lab. The 24-hour strike will commence at 12:00 a.m. on May 1, 2025, and conclude at 11:59 p.m. May 1, 2025.

University Extension
All University Extension operations will continue as regularly scheduled with no anticipated impacts or interruptions.
Campus Veterinarian’s Office:
Scheduled services will continue without interruption.
Student Health Services:
Student Health Services will be open during regular hours, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., however, will only have limited services available on May 1st. Services that may be impacted include X-ray, pharmacy, and lab services.
Due to staffing shortages, the lab will have no availability for walk-in lab appointments and potentially no on-site testing. After-hours support lines will remain open as usual.
Counseling and Psychological Services:
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be open during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. However, due to staffing shortages, CAPS will only have limited triage support services available via walk-in and virtual walk-in access on May 1st. After-hours support lines will remain open as usual.
Case Management:
Case Management will be open during regular hours, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. However, due to staffing shortages, there may be a delay in Case Management’s response and there will be limited appointments available on May 1st.
SWIFT Crisis Response & Intervention:
SWIFT will continue to operate during normal business hours, 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. However, due to staffing shortages, there may be a delay in SWIFT's mobile crisis response on May 1st.
School of Medicine Health Clinic Services:
All School of Medicine Clinics will remain open for regular business.
Facilities Services:
Facilities Services will continue, to the best of their ability, to maintain service levels with the staffing available. Custodial & Housekeeping and Landscape Services operations are the services most likely to be impacted. On May 1st, Facilities Services will focus on building security (unlocking and locking facilities); health and safety issues including trash removal; and providing setups for scheduled events. Please contact Facilities Services if you have a critical need that is related to health and safety concerns.
Central IT Services:
ITS remains committed to providing campus IT support, including support for the School of Medicine and UCR Health. ITS will continue to operate during regular business hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm). Please be advised, however, that response times may be longer than usual due to staffing shortages. We kindly ask that Highlanders prepare for possible delays in support related to:
- Campus Support Services (ticket and phone support)
- Student computer labs and IT Support Services stations in Rivera, Orbach, and SCC will remain open for onsite support

- SOM/UCR Health Client Support Services (including onsite/remote support and high-level system checks)

- Receipt and delivery of Office Max, FedEx and Amazon to the campus shipping and receiving location is expected to continue as normal
- There may be a reduction in the packages delivered by UPS or other unionized delivery companies

All communities, housing area front desks, as well as the Housing Services Administration Building, will remain open for normal business and hours. Custodial operations will continue but in a reduced format on May 1st urgent/time sensitive maintenance issues will be responded to on a priority basis.
