You have the option to continue health and welfare benefits when you separate from employment.

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) provides for continued coverage for a certain period of time at applicable monthly COBRA rates if you, your spouse or domestic partner, or your dependents lose group medical, dental, vision or Health FSA coverage because:

  • You terminate employment (for reasons other than gross misconduct);
  • Your work hours are reduced below the eligible status for these benefits;
  • You die, divorce, or are legally separated; or
  •  A child ceases to be an eligible dependent.

Alternative Options to Continue Coverage

  1. Visit the Covered California website at: https://www.coveredca.com
  2. Convert to an Individual medical plan – be sure to consult with your medical plan providers for costs.
  3. Consider enrollment in spouse or domestic partner insurance coverage.

COBRA Rates:

Premium rates include the full cost of coverage (UC does not contribute to the premium rate) plus a 2% administration fee. 

Length of COBRA Coverage:

  • Up to 18 months for former employee or
  • Up to 36 months if dependent loses coverage due to divorce, legal separation, annulment, end of domestic partnership, death, or reaching age 26.
