Disability Insurance

UC provides Short-Term Disability insurance, Supplemental Disability insurance and UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) disability benefits to eligible employees. These benefits, in conjunction with state-mandated Workers' Compensation and Social Security disability benefits, create a comprehensive safety net to protect employees from loss of wages over the course of a disability period.

Waiting Period

The waiting period is the length of time after an employee has been determined to have a disability before disability benefits begin.

  • Short-Term Disability only:  7-day waiting period
  • Supplemental Disability:  7, 30, 90 or 180-day waiting period. The Short-Term Disability waiting period is the same as Supplemental Disability.

Plan Cost

Short-Term Disability Plan and Workers' Compensation are UC-paid, while Supplemental Disability is employee-paid. To determine your monthly premium, use your age and monthly salary as of January 1 of the current year in the following calculator:


  • Employees with Full Benefits are automatically enrolled in Short-Term Disability at no cost and may purchase Supplemental Disability Insurance for a monthly premium. 
  • Employees who are vested (a minimum of five years retirement service credit) in the UC Retirement Plan are also eligible for UCRP Disability benefits.


If you leave UC employment or retire, you are no longer eligible for the UC-sponsored Short-Term, Supplemental or UCRP Disability plans. Coverage ends on your last day actively at work.
