Disaster Medical Assistance Teams

Disaster Medical Assistance Teams

Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs), are a national network of medical response teams that provide medical care to populations experiencing natural or man-made disasters.  The University is responsible to provide military leave when an employee is deployed to a disaster site as a member of a DMAT or when such service or training is called for by the federal government.

DMATs are volunteer teams of medical and paramedical professionals (supported by a cadre of logistical and administrative staff) organized under the National Disaster Medical System through the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS).  DMATs are principally a community resource available to support local, regional and State requirements.  However, as a national resource they can be federalized to provide interstate aid.

When service is called by the federal government, employees who are DMAT team members are entitled to the 30 days military pay required under State law covering public employers, including the University, provided that the eligibility requirements are met.

Service on a DMAT team that is not called by the federal government may be covered by administrative leave at the discretion of the Chancellor or an employee may use accrued vacation, compensatory time off, and/or leave without pay.

Please refer to PPSM-2.210: Absence from Work, Military Leave, for complete details concerning eligibility requirements and benefit provisions.
