Benefits for Separating Faculty & Staff

When you leave UC employment, your participation in UC-sponsored benefit plans usually will end. However, you may be able to continue some benefits for a limited time. Check with your Department Benefits Representative for details.

If you are eligible and want to retire from UC, see the Retirement Handbook and the Retirement section for information about retiree benefits. If you terminate UC employment for medical reasons, contact the Benefits Office immediately about your possible eligibility for disability, retirement, and/or other benefits.

Continuation of Benefits

Health & Welfare

  • If you leave UC employment, generally your UC-sponsored benefits end. If eligible, you may be able to continue your health, dental, and/or vision coverage for a limited time. For more details, see the COBRA page on At Your Service Online.
  • If you are retiring, you may be able to continue UC-sponsored medical coverage for yourself and your eligible family members if you meet the eligibility requirements. See When You Are Ready to Retire for additional information.

Legal

  • If you leave UC employment, you may be able to purchase an individual policy on a direct-pay basis through ARAG at (800) 828-1395.
  • If you are retiring, you may continue participation in the legal plan as long as your monthly retirement benefit covers your monthly cost.

Life Insurance

  • When you leave UC employment or retire, you can continue life insurance benefits. You have different options depending upon the plan.
    • Basic or Core Life Insurance benefits can be converted to an individual Whole Life plan with Prudential, UC’s life insurance carrier.
    • Supplemental Life Insurance benefits can be converted to a whole life plan or carried over to the Prudential Portability group term life plan. Group term life insurance plans have lower premiums than individual whole life plans.
    • Dependent Life insurance coverage also has both the portability and conversion options. However, portability is available only if you also elect portability of your Supplemental Life Insurance Plan.
  • You must be actively at work on the day prior to separation from employment to be eligible for portability, and your dependent is not confined for medical care or treatment, at home or elsewhere on the day your term life coverage ends.
  • The life insurance benefits for those that participate in the portability option will be reduced to 60% at age 65, 50% at age 70 and will terminate at age 80.
  • For the appropriate conversion or portability application form, contact the Benefits Office.

Disability

  • If you leave UC employment or retire, you are no longer eligible for the UC-sponsored Short-Term, Supplemental Disability plans. Coverage ends on your last day actively at work.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

  • Coverage ends on the last day of the last month for which you have an eligible appointment and premiums are paid. You may convert this coverage to an individual policy.
  • You and/or your eligible family members have 31 days to apply for conversion. When you convert coverage, you pay premiums directly to the carrier. For more information, call (800) 722-7863.
  • Please note that individual policies are generally more costly and provide fewer benefits.
